Hip Preoperative Procedures

Hip replacement surgery is a big decision — one that undoubtedly provokes a certain amount of apprehension. Fully understand the entire process before making a decision can make patients a little more comfortable with the idea of undergoing a major surgery. At CORE, we like to make sure there are no surprises on the day of surgery.

Whether you’re still considering hip surgery or are only a few days away from your procedure, here’s a brief overview of the preoperative procedures you can expect on the day of your surgery:

1. 1. You’ll arrive at the surgery center or hospital, and will be asked to complete any intake paperwork so you can be admitted. Usually, this happens the morning of your surgery.
2. 2. Your baseline vitals will be taken by a nurse to gather a better picture of your pre-surgery health.
3. 3. You’ll be asked to change into a hospital gown. Your nurse will instruct you on what clothes you must remove before the surgery.
4. 4. You’ll be given an IV to deliver fluids and medication before and after the surgery.
5. 5. You may receive an elastic stocking to minimize the risk of blood clots.
6. 6. You’ll be given time to empty your bladder.
7. 7. You’ll be asked to remove all nail polish and jewelry.
8. 8. Your provider will talk to you about anesthesia and determine which type will be used.
9. 9. When the surgeon is ready for you, you’ll be taken to the operating room.
